Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional disorder that affects the large intestine, leading to a group of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. It is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. Though it does not cause permanent damage to the intestines or lead to serious diseases, it can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Causes

  • Abnormal gut motility
  • Increased intestinal sensitivity
  • Stress and emotional imbalances
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Poor dietary habits
  • Hormonal changes
  • Gut-brain axis dysfunction

Symptoms

  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Bloating and gas
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or alternating episodes
  • Mucus in the stool
  • A feeling of incomplete evacuation
  • Fatigue and disturbed sleep
  • Anxiety and depression

Ayurvedic Perspective on IBS (Grahani Roga)

In Ayurveda, IBS closely resembles Grahani Roga, which stems from a weakened digestive fire (Agni) and imbalance of the Doshas– mainly Vata and Pitta. When Agni becomes irregular due to poor diet, stress, or improper lifestyle, it leads to the formation of Ama (toxins) and impaired digestion.

According to Ayurvedic principles:

  • Vata-type IBS manifests as constipation, dry stools, bloating, and anxiety.
  • Pitta-type IBS involves loose stools, burning sensations, and irritability.
  • Kapha-type IBS includes heaviness, mucus-laden stools, and sluggish digestion.

Restoring Agni and balancing the Doshas is key to managing IBS in Ayurveda.
