Urticaria
Urticaria, commonly known as Hives, is a skin condition marked by sudden outbreaks of red, itchy welts or raised bumps on the skin. These welts may vary in size, shape, and location, often appearing and disappearing within hours, only to recur again. Urticaria can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting more than 6 weeks), and in some cases, it may be associated with angioedema—swelling of deeper tissues, particularly around the eyes, lips, and throat.
At Agni Ayurvedic Village, we approach Urticaria holistically through Ayurveda, aiming to balance aggravated doshas, detoxify the body, calm the immune response, and strengthen skin and blood tissues for sustained relief and prevention of recurrence.
Causes
Urticaria develops due to an abnormal immune response leading to the release of histamine and other chemicals in the skin. Common causes and triggers include:
- Allergic reactions to foods (nuts, shellfish, eggs, dairy, etc.)
- Drug reactions (antibiotics, painkillers, etc.)
- Insect bites or stings
- Environmental triggers (heat, cold, sun exposure, water, pressure)
- Stress and emotional factors
- Chronic infections (respiratory, urinary, dental)
- Hormonal imbalances
- Autoimmune dysfunction
From an Ayurvedic perspective, Urticaria is linked to Sheetapitta, caused by vitiation of Vata and Kapha, along with aggravated Pitta. Accumulated Ama (toxins) in the blood (Rakta Dhatu) obstructs channels, triggering hypersensitivity and skin eruptions.
Types of Urticaria
Urticaria can present in different patterns depending on the trigger:
- Acute Urticaria: Short-term episodes, often due to allergies or infections.
- Chronic Urticaria: Persists for more than 6 weeks, often linked to autoimmune issues.
- Physical Urticaria: Triggered by physical factors like pressure, vibration, cold, heat, or sun exposure.
- Dermatographism: Raised red lines or welts appear when the skin is scratched or rubbed.
- Cholinergic Urticaria: Triggered by heat, exercise, or emotional stress.
- Angioedema-associated Urticaria: Deeper swelling in the skin, often around lips, eyelids, or throat.
Identifying the type helps in choosing effective Ayurvedic therapies and lifestyle guidance.
Symptoms
Urticaria typically presents with:
- Raised, red or skin-colored welts (hives)
- Severe itching and burning sensation
- Swelling of the lips, eyelids, or throat (angioedema in some cases)
- Welts that change shape, size, and location rapidly
- Flare-ups triggered by food, stress, or environmental factors
- Recurrence of symptoms, especially in chronic cases
Although hives themselves are not life-threatening, sudden swelling of the throat and breathing difficulty requires immediate medical care.
Complications
Untreated or chronic Urticaria may lead to:
- Persistent itching and discomfort affecting sleep and daily life
- Secondary skin infections due to scratching
- Emotional distress, anxiety, or depression
- Reduced work efficiency and quality of life
- Angioedema-related breathing difficulties (rare but serious)
Ayurvedic management works on immune regulation, purification of blood, and lifestyle modification to prevent such complications.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Urticaria
In Ayurveda, Urticaria correlates with Sheetapitta. The pathology involves:
- Aggravated Vata and Kapha, along with disturbed Pitta, causing hypersensitivity and itching
- Ama accumulation in the blood leading to allergic-type reactions
- Weak Agni (digestive fire), resulting in poor metabolism and toxin buildup
- Blocked Rakta Vaha Srotas (blood channels) causing welts and swelling
- Reduced Ojas, lowering immunity and tissue resilience
The Ayurvedic approach focuses on pacifying doshas, purifying Rakta Dhatu, and strengthening immunity for long-lasting relief.
