Panchakarma Treatment for Diabetes
In Ayurveda, Diabetes is co-related with Madhumeha. In this condition, the person passes honey(sweet) like in the urine. It is mentioned under the 20 types of prameha or urological disorders.
Causes of diabetes according to Ayurveda:
- Excessive use of ahara which is guru (heavy to digest)
- Snigdha (unctuous)
- Navanapanam (food that is prepared with newly harvested grains)
- Amla rasa (sour taste)
- Ashya sukham (sedentary lifestyle)
The following factors aggravate the kapha dosha along with pitta dosha. These creates variations in the medas dhathu or the fatty tissue. This affects the fat metabolism leading to the imbalance of the kleda or fluid. Hence all the kleda or the fluid moves towards the urinary system further causing excessive urination and gradually leading to premeham.
As per Ayurveda, panchakarma procedure purifies and detoxes the body in a natural way. Panchakarma like Abhyangam, swedanam, vasti, virechanam is beneficial in the Ayurvedic treatment of diabetes. It helps in finding the root cause, cleaning the toxins, and helping in the proper functioning of the organs like the pancreas, thus correcting insulin production and absorption in the body.
Abhyangam:
People suffering from diabetes have a certain stress level. This tends to increase the sugar levels even in a diabetic. Abhyangam helps in relaxing the muscles and improving the circulation in the body further increasing the glucose absorption and the amount of insulin required for impaired glucose level in the body.
Swedanam:
This procedure opens the pores and cleanses the system through the skin eliminating toxins along with sweat.
Vasti:
Vasti concentrates on the elimination of toxins from the body through the rectum. Medicated oils and decoctions are introduced into the anal region of the patient with a catheter. Mainly oil like madhuyastiyadi tailam for anuvasana and niruha vasti with madhuyasti kwatha and punarnavadhi kwatha are used.
Udwarthanam:
The procedure involves rubbing medicated powders on the body. This helps in reducing the medas dhatu or the fatty tissue in the body.
Virechanam:
It is the medicated purgation therapy that removes toxins from the body that are accumulated in the liver and the gallbladder. Doshas are removed in the form of feces through the rectum. It completely cleans the gastrointestinal tract. This makes the organs light and helps in their proper functioning.
