Gout

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, most commonly affecting the big toe, ankles, knees, and elbows. It leads to sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and heat in the affected joints.

Gout can occur as a single acute attack or become a chronic condition with repeated flare-ups, leading to joint damage if not managed properly.

Causes

Gout develops when uric acid builds up in the blood and forms sharp, needle-like crystals in the joints. Contributing factors include:

  • Excessive intake of purine-rich foods (red meat, seafood, alcohol)
  • Obesity or sedentary lifestyle
  • Kidney dysfunction (impaired uric acid excretion)
  • Certain medications
  • Family history of gout
  • Chronic stress and improper digestion

Unmanaged uric acid levels over time can cause chronic joint damage and deformities.

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, gout is closely related to a condition known as “Vatarakta”—a disorder caused by the simultaneous aggravation of Vata dosha and Rakta dhatu (blood tissue).

  • Vata governs movement and circulation, and its imbalance causes pain and dryness.
  • Rakta, when vitiated by toxins (Ama) and metabolic waste (like uric acid), leads to inflammation and discoloration.
  • The improper digestion of food, formation of Ama, and blocked bodily channels (srotas) create a toxic environment in the joints.

The Ayurvedic goal is to correct digestion, detoxify the blood, reduce inflammation, and restore joint health.
