Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It is often characterized by sharp, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness affecting one side of the lower body.
This condition is not a disorder itself but a symptom of an underlying issue, such as a herniated disc or spinal compression, that irritates the sciatic nerve.
Causes
Sciatica may result from various structural or lifestyle-related issues, including:
- Herniated or slipped disc pressing on the nerve
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal)
- Piriformis syndrome
- Poor posture or prolonged sitting
- Injury or trauma to the lower back
- Obesity or pregnancy-related changes
Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda, Sciatica is referred to as “Gridhrasi”, a condition caused predominantly by an imbalance in Vata dosha, sometimes accompanied by Kapha dosha.
- Vata dosha governs nerve impulses and movement. When aggravated, it leads to pain, dryness, stiffness, and nerve irritation.
- Kapha dosha, when involved, adds heaviness, numbness, and swelling to the condition.
Gridhrasi typically starts in the buttocks or lower back and radiates down the thigh, calf, and foot, mirroring the path of the sciatic nerve.
