Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is a gynecological condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) breaks through and grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium). This abnormal growth leads to an enlarged uterus, painful and heavy periods, and other discomforts that can significantly affect a woman’s quality of life.
Unlike endometriosis, where endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, adenomyosis occurs within the uterine wall, often causing chronic pelvic pain and menstrual irregularities.
Causes
While the exact cause of adenomyosis is not fully known, contributing factors may include:
- Hormonal Imbalance – particularly excessive estrogen.
- Uterine Inflammation – due to childbirth, surgeries, or infections.
- Previous Uterine Surgeries – such as C-sections or fibroid removal.
- Age and Reproductive History – more common in women aged 35–50 and those who have had multiple pregnancies.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Adenomyosis
In Ayurveda, adenomyosis is viewed as a result of vitiated Vata and Pitta doshas, along with Rakta (blood) and Mamsa (muscle tissue) dhatu imbalance. Disturbances in Apana Vata, which governs the reproductive system, lead to the abnormal growth and movement of endometrial tissue into the uterine muscle layer.
The condition is understood as a form of “Granthi” (abnormal mass) formation or “Yoni Vyapad” (disorders of the female reproductive system). Accumulation of ama (toxins), disturbed digestion (Agni), and mental stress also play significant roles in its manifestation.
