Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. In individuals with celiac disease, gluten intake triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine’s lining, leading to poor nutrient absorption and a host of digestive and systemic symptoms.

Symptoms

Celiac disease manifests differently in different people, with both gastrointestinal and non-digestive symptoms. Common signs include:

  • Bloating, gas, and abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Anemia (due to poor iron absorption)
  • Skin rashes (like dermatitis herpetiformis)
  • Joint pain
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  • Delayed growth in children

Causes & Risk Factors

Celiac disease is genetically linked and often runs in families. It is triggered when someone with a genetic predisposition consumes gluten. Risk factors include:

  • Family history of autoimmune disorders
  • Early introduction of gluten to infants
  • Intestinal infections or trauma
  • Chronic stress or poor digestion (Agni dushti in Ayurveda)

Ayurvedic Perspective on Celiac Disease

In Ayurveda, celiac disease can be understood as a combination of Agni (digestive fire) imbalance, Grahani dosha (intestinal disorder), and Ama (toxins) accumulation. It is primarily seen as a Pitta–Kapha–Vata imbalance affecting the gut lining and immune system.

Poor digestion, long-term improper eating habits, and mental stress weaken the digestive fire, leading to a hypersensitive gut, autoimmunity, and malabsorption.

Panchakarma and Upakarmas

At Agni Ayurvedic Village, we adopt a gentle yet deep-rooted healing protocol using customized Panchakarma therapies that detoxify, calm the immune response, and strengthen the gut.

  • Snehana (Internal & External Oleation): Prepares the body for detox, nourishes tissues
  • Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation): Removes excess Pitta and clears toxins from the gut
  • Basti (Medicated Enemas): Rejuvenates colon, improves nutrient absorption, and balances Vata
  • Takradhara / Shirodhara: Calms the mind, regulates hormonal and immune functions
  • Abhyanga & Swedana: Relaxing oil massage and steam to relieve joint pain and fatigue
