H-pylori
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that infects the stomach lining and is one of the most common causes of gastritis, peptic ulcers, and other digestive disturbances. While many people with H. pylori may remain asymptomatic for years, untreated infections can lead to more serious gastrointestinal conditions.
Causes
H-pylori is usually transmitted through contaminated food, water, or close contact with infected individuals. The following factors increase the risk of infection:
- Poor hygiene or sanitation
- Overuse of NSAIDs or antacids
- Stress and poor dietary habits
- Weak digestive fire (Mandagni) and toxin accumulation
- Low immunity or compromised gut flora
From an Ayurvedic standpoint, these conditions create an internal environment where Ama (toxins) accumulate, weakening Agni and allowing harmful organisms like H. pylori to thrive.
Symptoms
- Burning sensation or pain in the upper abdomen
- Bloating and fullness after eating
- Frequent burping or belching
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Bad breath
Complications of Untreated H. pylori
- Peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal)
- Chronic gastritis
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Bleeding ulcers
- Stomach cancer in rare, severe cases
- Nutrient malabsorption and fatigue
Ayurvedic Perspective on H. pylori
In Ayurveda, H. pylori-related conditions are often correlated with Amlapitta (excessive acid secretion), Annadrava Shoola (indigestion-related pain), and Krimi Roga (bacterial overgrowth or parasitic infection). The root causes are typically Agnimandya (weak digestive fire), imbalance of Pitta dosha, and accumulation of Ama (toxins).
The Ayurvedic approach focuses on:
- Reigniting the digestive fire
- Eliminating toxins and microbial overgrowth
- Healing the gut lining
Restoring balance in the doshas
