Allergies

What is allergy?

Allergies are a hypersensitive immune reaction on contact with a substance that may be harmless to many other people. Allergic reactions fall into two broad categories, and depending on the type of allergy a person has, their symptoms will usually vary.

Type 1: This type of allergy is called an “immediate hypersensitivity” and is caused by exposure to substances that are not harmful to most people. These substances can include various trees, pollen, grasses, pet dander or dust mites.

Type 2: This type of allergy is called an “antibody-mediated hypersensitivity”, and in some cases can take as long as 24 hours before symptoms start to become visible. Antibody-mediated allergies could be triggered by foods such as eggs and peanuts as well as medicines like pen

What causes allergies?

Scientists have found that allergies are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Allergies may be caused by an overactive immune system or an underdeveloped one.

People can develop allergies to things they come into contact with in their daily lives, such as dust, pollen, pet dander, mold, and insect venom. Some people are also more prone to developing allergies because of their genetics.
