Dysmenorhea
Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstruation, a condition affecting a large percentage of menstruating women. It is characterized by cramping pain in the lower abdomen, often accompanied by nausea, fatigue, headaches, and mood changes.
There are two types:
- Primary Dysmenorrhea – Pain without any underlying pelvic condition, typically starting in adolescence.
- Secondary Dysmenorrhea – Caused by reproductive system disorders like endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Causes
Primary Dysmenorrhea
- Overproduction of prostaglandins causing uterine muscle contractions.
- Hormonal imbalances.
- Stress and emotional strain.
- Poor dietary and lifestyle habits.
Secondary Dysmenorrhea
- Endometriosis – Endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus.
- Uterine fibroids – Noncancerous growths in the uterus.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) – Infections of the reproductive organs.
- Adenomyosis – Invasion of endometrial tissue into the uterine wall.
Complications
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Fatigue and anemia
- Mood disturbances and anxiety
- Disruption in daily life and work
- Underlying reproductive issues (in secondary dysmenorrhea)
Ayurvedic Perspective on Dysmenorrhea
In Ayurveda, dysmenorrhea is primarily associated with the aggravation of Vata dosha, particularly Apana Vata, which governs menstruation and elimination. The pain is a result of obstructed or irregular flow of Vata in the pelvic region.
This condition is classified under “Kashta Artava” (Kashta = painful, Artava = menstruation), and is often aggravated by ama (toxins), improper diet, stress, and sedentary lifestyle.
Ayurveda aims to restore the natural flow of Vata, improve digestion (Agni), and balance hormonal function for long-term relief.
