Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition where the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside it-commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the pelvic lining. This tissue continues to act like endometrial tissue—thickening, breaking down, and bleeding with each menstrual cycle. However, since it has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped, leading to inflammation, pain, and formation of scar tissue.
Causes
- Retrograde menstruation – menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvic cavity instead of leaving the body.
- Hormonal imbalance – especially elevated oestrogen levels.
- Genetic predisposition – family history may increase the risk.
- Immune system disorders – inability to recognize and destroy endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus.
- Surgical transmission – endometrial cells may be transferred during surgeries like C-sections.
Complications
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Infertility
- Ovarian cysts (endometriomas)
- Adhesions and scar tissue formation
- Bowel and urinary complications
- Emotional and psychological stress
Ayurvedic Perspective on Endometriosis
In Ayurveda, endometriosis is understood as a condition involving the vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas, along with rakta (blood) dhatu imbalance. It is viewed as a result of disturbed digestion (Agni), improper lifestyle habits, and emotional imbalances leading to ama (toxins) accumulation and hormonal disharmony.
The displaced endometrial tissue is compared to the granthi (cystic growth) or arbuda (tumor-like formation), and pain is often linked to aggravated Apana Vata, the sub-dosha governing the pelvic region.
